Course Introduction

This course caters for the current global need for toxicologists and ecotoxicologists who are competent in conducting hazard and risk evaluation of chemical substances. The course is designed to train students for a career as registered toxicologists. It is suitable for graduates interested in obtaining a qualification in human and environmental health as well as students already in full time employment working for industry, contract laboratories or government agencies, who require either formal qualifications or intend to revalidate their qualifications in toxicology.

Course Modules

Core modules include: priority pollutants and human health effects; essentials in ecotoxicology; designing, analysing and interpreting (eco) toxicological studies; current practice in chemical risk assessment; chemical regulation and legislation in the EU; carcinogens and mutagens; dissertation. Optional modules include: mixtures toxicology and cumulative risk assessment; reproductive toxicology and endocrine disruption; computational toxicology (modelling and predicting toxicity).

Course Additional Entry

A UK 1st or 2nd Class Honours degree or equivalent internationally recognised qualification in a relevant scientific discipline such as biology, biochemistry, chemistry, environmental sciences or other life'sciences'related disciplines; applicants with a 3rd Class Honours degree or other qualifications will be considered if supported by science A'level (or equivalent) and relevant work experience; such applicants may be required to attend an interview; applicants whose 1st language is not English require: ILETS 6.5 (with a minimum of 6 in all areas); TOEFL paper'based test 580 (with a minimum of 4.5 in the test of written English); TOEFL internet'based test 92 (with a minimum of 20 in reading, listening, speaking and writing); Pearson 58 (with a minimum of 51 in all subscores); or BrunELT 65 per cent (with a minimum of 60 per cent in all areas).
