Course Introduction

The course guides students through to a mastery of the mathematical ideas underlying modern finance theory, along with the associated market structures and conventions, with emphasis on: (a) the modelling of financial assets, both in equity markets and in fixed'income markets; (b) the pricing and hedging of options and other derivatives; and (c) the quantification and management of financial risk; the programme provides a balanced mixture of advanced mathematics (probability theory, stochastic calculus), modern finance theory (derivatives, interest rates, foreign exchange), and computational technique (GPU'based high'performance computing).

Course Modules

Modules include: probability and stochastics; financial markets; option pricing theory; interest rate theory; financial computing 1; Optional modules: portfolio theory; information in finance with application to credit risk management; mathematical theory of dynamic asset pricing; financial computing 2; statistics for finance.research project.

Course Additional Entry

A UK 1st or 2.1 Honours degree or equivalent internationally recognised qualification in maths; other related disciplines with a significant quantitative component (calculus and algebra) may be considered on an individual basis; other qualifications with relevant work experience may be considered and applicants may be required to attend an interview; applicants whose 1st language is not English require: ILETS 6 (with a minimum of 5.5 in all areas); TOEFL paper'based test 550 (with a minimum of 4 in the test of written English); TOEFL internet'based test 79 (with a minimum of 18 in reading, 17 in listening, 20 in speaking and 17 in writing); Pearson 51 (with a minimum of 51 in all subscores); or BrunELT 60 per cent (with a minimum of 55 per cent in all areas).
