Course Introduction

Course Modules

Year 1: news media; visual culture; media, culture and identity; media and society; from mass media to multimedia. Optional modules: language, society and power; English for academic study; reading visual aesthetics; forms of cinema; shorthand; digital photography workshop. Year 2: research methods for communications and culture; employability for the creative industries; global trends in television; introduction to radio. Optional modules: studying popular culture; screening gender; media and social change (class, race and ethnicity); language in the media; about reading; thinking about film; genre and cultural context; politics and the media; travel journalism; media in contemporary society. Year 3: dissertation. Optional modules: madness and metaphor: culture on the edge; emotions in culture; screen women (from pin'ups to post feminism); contemporary Hollywood cinema; cult film and television; east and west (terror, power and new journalism); north and south (reporting Africa); understanding globalisation.
