The course provides epidemiological training by distance learning for professionals in academic departments, research units, or in the health services; Students will develop: a comprehensive understanding of the basic concepts and methods in epidemiology together with advanced skills in specific applications of epidemiological research methods; essential statistical skills related to the health problems of both the developed and the developing world.
Core modules include: Fundamentals of epidemiology; statistics with computing; practical epidemiology; writing and reviewing epidemiological papers; epidemiology of communicable diseases; modelling and the dynamics of infectious diseases; advanced statistical methods in epidemiology; human genetic epidemiology; global epidemiology of non'communicable diseases.
Course Additional Entry
A 1st or 2nd Class Honours degree, or the equivalent, from a university or other institution acceptable to the University of London, in a subject appropriate to the course; alternatively, an appropriate professional or technical qualification, together with at least 3 years' relevant experience, which satisfies the University as a qualification equivalent to a 2nd Class Honours degree (all applications in this category will be considered on an individual basis); students who do not satisfy these requirements may still be admitted at the discretion of the School on the basis of their academic qualifications, work experience and references; applicants without English as their 1st language must have achieved within the previous 3 years: IELTS 7.0 with a minimum of 7 in written sub'test, or TOEFL paper'based test 600 or computer'based test 250 with a minimum of 5 in the test of written English, or TOEFL internet'based test 100 with a minimum of 24 in the test of written English.
