Course Introduction

The Department of Earth Sciences was ranked 6th in the UK in the 2008 RAE with 70% of our research rated as world'leading or internationally excellent. You will get the opportunity to spend the third year abroad studying at a partner university in Canada, United States, Australia or New Zealand. The course emphasises the chance to develop practical skills and participate in fieldwork around the world. Final year course units are linked to MSc classes.

Course Modules

Year 1: global tectonics; introductory sedimentology; environmental issues; igneous and metamorphic geology; physics and chemistry of the earth; earth structures; mathematics for geologists; introductory palaeontology. Year 2: stratigraphy and the history of life; regional geology; geohazards; geochemistry; field methods in geology. Year 3: advanced concepts and techniques in geology; global information systems and remote sensing; environmental geoscience report; methods of environmental investigation; advanced topics in sedimentology; aqueous geology; volcanology; mineral resources; applied geology. Year 4: independent environmental geoscience project; environmental field investigations; research proposal; water quality; air pollution; oceans and atmospheres; contaminated land; environmental inorganic analysis; palaeoclimates.
