Course Introduction

You'll be encouraged to develop an awareness of academic thinking and critical theory behind performance practices, becoming a confident critic and commentator. You'll explore a variety of approaches to practice including improvisation, live art, political theatre, physical theatre and site'specific performance.

Course Modules

Year 1: Writing, performance and the subject; performance histories; systems of rehearsal: the actor; performance laboratory I; text into performance; twentieth century theatre practice. Year 2: Multimedia performance; 2 x student theatre company productions; performance laboratory II; practices of adaptation; physical theatres. Year 3:Modern performance practice and composition; dissertation (double module); major performance project (triple module).
