Course Introduction

The combined honours degree in Korean is designed to provide a comprehensive overview and understanding of Korea and Korean culture by combining instruction in language, literature, and history. At the completion of their studies, students should have a high level of competency in both spoken and written forms of Korean. In addition to thorough training in the language, the degree aims to impart to its students knowledge of Korean traditions and modern Korean society.

Korean Modules include: Elementary Korean; modern Korean culture and society; pre'modern Korean history; mixed script Korean; readings in modern Korean society; modern Korean literature; Korean composition; Korean conversation; Korean art history; history and structure of the Korean language; advanced readings in Korean; Korean art history. Japanese studies Modules include: Aspects of Japanese culture 1; aspects of Japanese culture 2; survey of pre'modern Japanese literature in translation; survey of modern Japanese literature in translation; independent project in Japanese studies; basic Japanese; intermediate Japanese; introduction to pre'modern Japanese language; readings in Japanese history; readings in Japanese intellectual history; advanced practical Japanese; readings in pre'modern Japanese literature; readings in modern Japanese literature; introduction to pre'modern Japanese language; Japanese art; survey of modern Japanese literature in translation; introduction to the history of East Asia; Buddhism: foundation; religions of East and Central Asia; issues in Post'War Japanese society 1; issues in Post'War Japanese society 2; extended essay (Japanese language and culture) 1; ethnography of a selected region (Japan); city and country in modern Japan; Japanese religion: a historical overview; themes in Japanese religions; representing religion in Japanese films; economic development of Japan since 1868; extended essay (Japanese language and culture) 2; memory and militarism on Japanese TV; readings in modern Japanese literature; readings in pre'modern Japanese literature; introduction to the study of language learning; the structure of Japanese.
