Course Introduction

This programme deals with the essential theoretical and practical concepts concerning the effective management of wellbeing and health of individuals and groups of people with healthcare needs; the programme provides a solid academic underpinning to illnesses and healthcare practices and healthcare enterprise as set in a real work environment or situation; it is firmly committed to the practitioner'scholar model; students receive a thorough grounding in the scientific foundations of health, illness, healthcare service design and improvement; students are also taught the most up'to'date concepts in research methodology and data analysis in healthcare, and learn comprehensive clinically'focused and professional skills; coursework and simulation are used to emphasise the integration of scientific principles and the use of empirical evidence and validated theoretical models in guiding clinical practice.

Course Modules

Modules include: service design and improvement in healthcare; research methods; genes, diseases, health and illness; Master's project in healthcare. Optional modules include: leadership and management competence in healthcare; advanced approach in diabetes care and management; promoting sexual health; substance misuse treatment and interventions; communicable diseases (risks and assessment for substance misusers); management of long'term conditions.

Course Additional Entry

An Honours degree with 2.2 or higher classification or equivalent in a healthcare or life'science related subject (e.g. biochemistry, microbiology, physiology, human biology, physiotherapy, podiatry, nutrition); applicants who are healthcare professionals must normally be registered with an appropriate regulatory authority (e.g. Health Professions Council or equivalent) in their country of origin, and have evidence of the successful completion of at least 3 years full time study leading to registration; applicants whose 1st language is not English require either IELTS 7.0 or above including a minimum 7.0 for each of the 4 individual components, TOEFL internet'based test 100 or above, Pearson PTE Academic 58 or above, or an equivalent secure English language test.
