Course Introduction

The programme is based upon active problem'based learning and its focus is to equip students with all the skills they will need to become highly employable. Lectures and tutorials are blended with practical classes to give to the students a complete, robust and well'rounded education in physics. A very strong emphasis is given to applications of Physics to our daily lives to develop the next generation of talented applied physicists. Students will undertake individual and group project work either within the Applied Physics department or with one of our industrial partners. Specific modules are designed to develop industry'standard skills in computing and programming including data processing. The specialist content of the course in the final year is strongly influenced by research expertise within the Applied Physics Department and our industrial partners. Famous as the home of the atomic clocks that provide the basis for the UK's time and frequency measurements, the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) is the UK's National Measurement Institute and is a world leading centre of excellence in Applied Physics employing over 500 scientists in 388 state'of'the'art laboratories on an extensive site in Teddington. The majority of the experimental and project work in the Applied Physics degree will be undertaken at NPL in dedicated purpose'built laboratory facilities. Students will also have access to other facilities at NPL including the refectory and library.
