University of the Arts London

Course Introduction

This programme provides a unique learning experience across an intensive 30 week programme. The highly structured delivery of the 1st stage of the course places emphasis on the development of fundamental design skills. This is underpinned with the importance of visual research and the development of critical and analytical skills. During the 2nd stage of the course students will choose from a wide range of postgraduate electives and go on to develop a self'initiated major project that focuses on individual interests. The course is designed to build design skills even if students are relatively new to the subject of graphic design. It provides students with a strong, vocational portfolio and is also useful in building confidence to undertake further postgraduate study at Masters' level.

Course Modules

Modules include: Research and development; design resolution; professional and academic contexts; collaborative unit; project realisation and analysis; major project.

Course Additional Entry

Applicants are required to have an Honours degree in a related subject, or a professional or academic qualification recognised as equivalent to an Honours degree. Applicants who do not have the required qualifications, but do have professional experience, may be eligible to gain credit for previous learning and experience through the Accreditation of Prior and Experiential Learning (APEL) i.e. professional experience or a combination of courses and work experience. Experience is assessed as a learning process and tutors will evaluate that experience for currency, validity, quality and sufficiency. Some prior knowledge of design software is helpful, but not a requirement for joining the course. Software skills are however not taught as part of the course, so if applicants are unfamiliar with design software, it might be useful to study a part'time software course concurrently or in advance of joining the course. Applicants whose 1st language is not English require IELTS 6.5 (or equivalent) overall, with 5.5 in each skill.
