Course Introduction

The course aims to develop a theoretical and practical understanding of the issues involved in the design, conduct, analysis and interpretation of randomised controlled trials of health interventions; skills to scrutinize information, to critically analyse and carry out research, and to communicate effectively.

Course Modules

Modules include: Fundamentals of clinical trials, basic statistics for clinical trials, clinical trials in practice, reporting and reviewing clinical trials; protocol development; trial designs, project management and research co'ordination, regulatory affairs, good clinical practice and ethics, data management, data monitoring and interim analyses, design and analysis of epidemiological studies, further statistical methods in clinical trials, cluster randomised trials; epidemiology of communicable diseases, epidemiology of non'communicable diseases, advanced statistical methods in epidemiology, molecular and genetic epidemiology, economic evaluation, health care evaluation.

Course Additional Entry

A 2nd class honours degree, or the equivalent, in a subject appropriate to the course or an appropriate professional or technical qualification; minimum 3 years' relevant experience, which satisfies the University as a qualification equivalent to a second class honours degree; PgDip: either a first degree in a subject appropriate to the course or in another discipline which has suitable preliminary training or previous education and experience without a first degree, which satisfies the University that the applicant has obtained a level of academic proficiency equivalent to a first degree; advanced level of ability to work in English is required, must pass a test of proficiency in English acceptable to the University, e.g. a TOEFL score of 580 or a British Council (IELTS) score of 6.5; there is a minimum computer specification for this course.
