Course Introduction

Applicants for this practice'based MPhil and PhD programme are actively encouraged; students whose work seeks to extend the language of print through the use of new technologies and innovative uses of traditional methods are particularly welcomed; students take part in work'in'progress seminars, annual exhibitions and publishing ventures and are encouraged to present their work to other students throughout the course; current or recent areas of research include: the material image; collage, montage, appropriation; the archive; re'sitation (i.e. the public location of printed matter); digital dialogues.

Course Modules

Current or recent areas of research include: The material image (a series of research themes that are distinguished by an exploration of materiality and questions raised by works that use collage, montage, appropriation and the archive); collage/montage/appropriation; the archive (both our own archive and the notion of archiving). re'sitation (i.e. the public location of printed matter); digital dialogues (explorations of the relation of analogue to digital imaging/recording processes).

Course Additional Entry

For MPhil: normally a good relevant undergraduate degree, or equivalent qualification. For PhD: Master's degree or equivalent qualification; initial registration is usually for MPhil. Exceptionally, other qualifications may be approved, providing that the Academic Board for Concessions and Discipline (ABCD) is satisfied that the applicant has the ability to pursue the programme of research successfully. Candidates who do not speak English as their 1st language will be required to provide evidence that they have achieved at least 93 in the TOEFL internet based test with an additional writing test score of TWE 24 or an IELTS exam score of 6.5 with 6.5 in writing.
