Course Introduction

This course is aimed at students who are aspiring to become professional musical performers or an instrumental teacher and would like to deepen their knowledge of music performance. It focuses on performance practice, aesthetics, authenticity, contemporary performance, the psychology of performance and performance preparation leading to recitals. Students receive individual tuition on their instrument or voice.

Course Modules

Modules include: Major project; performance studies; researching music; the philosophy and psychology of musical performance. Optional modules: constructing music education in the UK; contemporary sonic arts practice; international music education: psychology, culture and philosophy; sound design; techniques and technology for composing for film and television; current debates in music education; jazz studies; live performance; special study; the psychology of music; the studio musician.

Course Additional Entry

At least a 2.2 Honours degree in music (this may be in a specialist field such as popular music, performance or music technology); an essay may need to be submitted and/or a video recording of performances; relevant experiential learning may be considered in lieu of a music degree; applicants whose 1st language is not English require an IELTS score of 6.5 or equivalent.
