Course Introduction

This programme refocuses issues of Western Gender Studies on the complex specificities of Asia, Africa and the Middle East; it offers the specialised study of gender in relation to Asian, African and Middle Eastern cultures, together with rigorous training in and questioning of contemporary gender theory.

Course Modules

Core modules: gender theory and the study of Asia, Africa and the Middle East; dissertation in gender studies. Optional modules: childhood, politics and law; gender in the Middle East 1 and 2; queer politics in Asia, Africa and the Middle East; gendering migration and diasporas; gender and development; issues in the anthropology of gender; feminist legal theory; critical theory and the study of religions; migration, gender and the law in South East Asia and beyond; gender, armed conflict and international law; imagining Pakistan: culture, politics, gender (MA); historical perspectives on gender in Africa; gender and music (MMus); gender and Christianity; Judaism and gender; genders and sexualities in South East Asian film; Arabic women's writing: theories and practices.
