Course Introduction

Education and Social Science explores the nature and purposes of education ' both formal and informal ' in a range of settings and across the life'span. The degree considers the value and purpose of education, both for individuals as well as wider society. It addresses issues of social justice and educational and social disadvantage. The programme has a strong sociological, political and philosophical focus to provide students with the critical tools required to interrogate policy debates and government initiatives. Students are prepared for entry into teacher training, but will be of interest to those interested in working with children and young people outside of formal education.

Course Modules

All levels: Modules focus on philosophies and purposes of education; individual and societal growth and development; communication and learning; historical perspectives; educational controversy; equality assurance; economics and politics; and extending of knowledge boundaries; content also includes the acquisition of organisation and management skills; effective oral, written and auditory communication skills; and the understanding of how learning takes place; every student is given the opportunity to develop computer competencies and applications; course provides a strong foundation for students contemplating postgraduate teaching studies and introduction to the world of work.
