Course Modules

Journalism Year 1: producing and debating journalism; creative environment; reporting Britain; news media. Optional modules: marketing and enterprise; digital photography workshop; media, culture and identity. Year 2: issues in journalism (ethics and law); the journalism industry; multimedia. Optional module: politics and the media; introduction to radio; feature writing; career preparation (journalism); travel journalism; sports journalism; website design; telling true stories; career preparation. Year 3: multimedia journalism; video journalism; magazine journalism; magazine production; journalism and news media dissertation. Optional modules: east and west (terror, power and new journalism); north and south (reporting Africa); investigative journalism; journalism assignment; multimedia journalism; video journalism; magazine journalism; magazine production; journalism and news media dissertation; work placement; popular journalism and tabloid culture. English Language and Linguistics Year 1: meaning in language; language, society and power. Optional modules: language change; accents and dialects; hands on language; language and logic; approaches and methods in language teaching; translation concepts and strategies. Year 2: English in its social context 1; English in its social context 2; discourse and conversation analysis 1; discourse and conversation analysis 2; phonetics and phonology; words and sentences 1; words and sentences 2. Optional modules: language and gender; stylistics; digital literacies; language in the media; child discourse; syntax; bilingual language use; pragmatics; writers, texts and contexts; history and theory of translation. Year 3: language acquisition; semantics; psycholinguistics; sexist language; language and the market; language issues in multilingual settings; philosophy of language; the linguistics of sign language; forensic linguistics; language disorders; 2nd language acquisition; English as a global language; English for specific purposes; intercultural communication.
