Year 1: Foundations of linguistics; thinking linguistics; the sounds of English; English as a global language; English in use. Year 2: Linguistics 2; optional modules: Aspects of meaning in language; ethnography of communication; explaining grammatical structure; language and gender; philosophy of language; language style, standardisation and the media; the linguistics of story'telling; the history of English; contemporary youth language; varieties of English; psycholinguistics. Year 3: Research methods in linguistics; research project in linguistics; optional modules: formal semantics; structures of spoken language; language in London; language variation and change; dialect syntax; prosody of English; bilingualism; syntactic theory; discovering and describing a less familiar language.
