Course Introduction

This programme focuses on rural areas which, despite growing urbanisation, continue to be home to the majority of the world's poorest people. It examines the complex nature of poverty, its causes, and processes of poverty reduction.

Course Modules

Modules include: Climate change and development; economics and institutions for development; managing knowledge and communication for development; rural development; understanding poverty; elective modules: gender and social development; management in rural development; NGO management; project planning and management; rural finance; agricultural trade and policy; food security and social protection; marketing for small agribusinesses; political economy of public policy; socioeconomics of rural livelihoods; natural resource economics; environmental science and management; international environmental law; sustainable land management; water resources management; research methods; dissertation.

Course Additional Entry

An Honours degree or equivalent in appropriate subject required for MSc; graduates in other disciplines which have included appropriate subjects and suitable preliminary training for this course, and non'graduates with previous education approved by the University as degree'equivalent, are considered for postgraduate diploma; advanced level of ability to work in English is required, equivalent to IELTS score 7.0 or TOEFL Test of English score 600.
