Course Introduction

We aim to produce well'educated, imaginative and professionally'trained graduates who can meet the challenge of rapid technological development. Our digital media courses bring together computer technology and creative design skills by integrating aspects of IT, media, design and communication so you can contribute immediately to the digital design revolution as soon as you graduate. We don't expect you to come from any specific educational background, but we do need you to show a strong interest in IT along with creative design flair. We invest heavily in IT resources, dedicated spaces for production work and media production equipment such as cameras, portable lighting and sound recording devices. Our software is regularly updated with all the latest industry tools. We have a dedicated motion capture and photography studio, and a green screen studio with a number of high specification edit suites linked to a fibre'optic high'speed network for moving large video and graphic files at high speed. We also have a sound'insulated recording studio and a booth for recording voiceovers. All equipment is state of the art. In addition to our BSc Digital Media we also offer specialist pathways/Joint Honours in the following areas giving you the chance to tailor your studies: ' Visual Effects and Motion Graphics BSc (Hons).

Course Modules

Level 1 Core: Autumn term: Creativity for digital media design (all year); digital photography; digital graphics; web design; business for the creative industries programming for digital media 1. Spring term: Introduction to video production; digital design theory; introduction to post production; CGI foundation for visual effects; acquisition for visual effects. Level 2 core: Autumn Term: motion graphics applications; applied media aesthetics 1; programming for the moving image; visual effects compositing; experimental digital futures (all year); marketing & professional development. Spring term: motion graphics design; applied media aesthetics 2; three'dimensional animation; CGI digital environments; three'dimensional matchmoving. Level 3: Optional Work placement.. (for thick'sandwich mode of study). Level 4 Core: Major project; working in the digital creative industries. Options: Rigging and motion capture; three'dimensional stereoscopic production; effects animation; digital experiences; sound production for mixed media; graphics; advanced motion graphics.
