Course Introduction

Attain a high level of proficiency in German on this joint degree in the heart of London and develop knowledge and understanding of the culture and society. Portuguese study embraces the language, history and culture of four continents: Europe, America, Africa and Asia.

Course Modules

Year 1 examples: German language extension I; translation from and into German I; die sprechstunde (oral language class); literature, love and society in Portugal; Portuguese identities. Year 2 examples: German economic thought and literature; politics and everyday life in 20th'century Germany; religion, sex and politics (German literature of the 16th and 17th centuries); Portuguese literature before and after the revolution; leaders, legends and chivalry in medieval Portugal; Portuguese symbolism and realism. Year 3: Year abroad. Year 4 examples: German economic thought and literature; politics and everyday life in 20th'century Germany; religion, sex and politics (German literature of the 16th and 17th centuries); translation into English; Portuguese modernism and Fernando Pessoa; Portuguese romanticism.
