Course Introduction

Our four Music degree courses are full of original content and are designed to be flexible. Whether you are drawn to performance, composition, writing about music or using new technologies, we'll make sure you have both the strong academic grounding and the specialised professional skills you need. We make lots of music here ' our facilities include state of the art computer suites and edit rooms, rehearsal and performance spaces, plus individual practice rooms and study areas so you have space to focus on making your own music. You can also join a diverse range of ensembles, including our Chamber Orchestra, the Jazzbridge Big Band, New Noise, the Chamber Choir, the Keyboard Ensemble and lots more.

Course Modules

Level 1 Core: (20 credits per module) Musicianship; materials of music; musicology 1: histories, forms and structures; sound recording & sonic arts; composition 1; performance 1. Level 2 Core: (20 credits per module) Musicology 2. Options: (20 credits per module) Composition 2; performance 2 (classical or experimental); performance 2 (popular music or jazz); conducting and realisation; instrumentation and orchestration; music and perception; popular music studies; stylistic improvisation; free improvisation; jazz and pop arranging; professional development. (40 credits) Sonic arts 2 Level 3 Core: (40 credits per module) Musicology 3: towards the new music; special project. Options: (20 credits per module) Conducting and realisation; instrumentation and orchestration; music and perception; popular music studies; stylistic improvisation; free improvisation; jazz and pop arranging; professional development.
