Course Introduction

This course gives students a technical understanding of both current and emerging technologies and the underlying theory of cryptography, networking and network security technologies. Students gain the skills needed to assess, plan, design and develop secure and reliable networks and systems.

Course Modules

Core modules: cryptography; secure and dependable computing; network security; TCP/IP networks; research methods; project/dissertation. Plus 3 option modules from: broadband and mobile networks; building e'business; component'based software engineering; corporate data and database management; developing object'orientated solutions; electronic commerce technologies; digital communications; enterprise networking; geographical information fundamentals; internet map services; internet wireless networks; programming in Java; web development in Java; knowledge management; location'based services, applications and technologies; multimedia communications; network design and management; network operating systems; projects and risk management; requirements engineering and management; software engineering tools; software quality assurance; spatial information analysis and modelling; strategic information systems for e'business; usability engineering; visualisation and image processing; wireless communications; information technology and entrepreneurship.

Course Additional Entry

An Honours degree or equivalent in a relevant subject; or substantial work experience; international students must have an IELTS score of 6.5 (with 6.0 in writing and 5.5 in the other elements) or equivalent.
