Course Introduction

Linguistics can be taken as a combined subject degree or a single'subject degree. SOAS is unique in the UK for being able to offer a range of subject combinations that include the opportunity to study the languages, literature, and cultures of Africa, Asia and the Near and Middle East.

South East Asian studies Modules include: Introduction to South East Asia; South East Asia on film; language course; war, revolution and independence in South East Asian literatures in translation; the city and the countryside in South East Asian literatures; independent study project in South East Asian studies; Thailand on screen (post 97); Indonesia on screen; sex and the city in South East Asian film; cultural foundations of Indonesia; Indonesian literature: literature of the revolution, Jawi and the manuscript tradition; pre'modern historical texts of Java, Bali and the Malay world in English translation; traditional Malay literature; adventure romances in texts and film language in South East Asia; Thai cultural texts; introduction to the history of South East Asia; introduction to the art and archaeology of South and South East Asia; introduction to the art and archaeology of East Asia; introduction to Islam; Buddhism: foundation; Hinduism: foundation; world Christianities foundation; extended essay in South East Asian studies; ethnography of a selected region (South East Asia); popular and fusion music in South East Asia; music and religion in South East Asia; South East Asia during the Cold War 1945'1991; arts of the Buddha in South East Asia; contemporary arts in South East Asia; South East Asian government and politics; economic development of South East Asia.
