Course Introduction

A French and Hispanic Studies degree in the heart of London, taught by world'class lecturers in a friendly and well'resourced environment. The Departments of French, and Spanish, Portuguese & Latin American Studies are active in all fields: language, literature and cultural history through to the present day. The year abroad is an obligatory and enriching part of our programmes, with a wide range of options to study usually split between French and Spanish'speaking countries.

Course Modules

Year 1 examples: Core French language; introduction to French literature (compulsory); core Spanish language I; culture and society in imperial Spain; Latin American visual arts, 19th and 20th century; introduction to Spanish American narrative. Year 2 examples: Core French language; the practice of translation (compulsory); core Spanish language II; death and desire (love in French literature before 1700); writing the self since 1700 in French literature; French poetry since 1800; comedy in French literature before 1700; the French novel since 1700. Year 3: Year abroad. Year 4 examples: Core French language; core Spanish language IV; the stylistics of translation; medieval occitan literature; the debate about women in the middle ages; 16th'century encounters with the new world.
