Course Introduction

The department of music has a lively and varied research base, large postgraduate community, active performing tradition and offers a proximity to London's resources; staff research interests are correspondingly diverse and wide'ranging and we offer research supervision in any of these areas of specialism; see staff research interests below for details; students register for 1 of 3 options: thesis in any area of musicology; contemporary music studies; analysis or ethnomusicology (up to 100,000 words for PhD; 60,000 for MPhil); composition: portfolio of compositions, and commentary (20,000 words for PhD, 12,000 words for MPhil); performance practice: full'length recital and related 50,000'word thesis for PhD; lunchtime recital and 30,000'word thesis for MPhil; topics could include areas such as contemporary music studies; ethnomusicology or aspects of historical performance; there is also a viva voce.

Course Additional Entry

1st degree of at least upper 2nd Class standard/Master's degree in an appropriate subject; graduates in an unrelated field may be considered subject to qualifying examination; applicants may be advised to take an MMus degree before starting research.
