Course Introduction

The course focuses on the relationship between communication, development and democracy. The course will appeal to students with a general interest in communication studies and cross'disciplinary interests in development studies, sociology and politics.

Course Modules

Modules include: Democratisation, information and communication; communication, culture and development; approaches to social research; dissertation. Optional modules: media information markets; developments in communications policy; media and communications theories; international communications and conflict; representation and reception; transnational media and communication; globalising cities; analysing media discourses; media and human rights; transnational communications and transcultural studies; political sociology; issues in media and communications research; international organisations in global politics; NGO's, human rights and the united nations system.

Course Additional Entry

An Honours degree in social science discipline; other relevant subjects or relevant work experience may be accepted; if English is not a 1st Language, applicants require 1 of the following: a 1st degree from an overseas institution recognised by the university as providing adequate evidence of proficiency in the English language, GCE O'level/GCSE English language or English literature, grade C minimum, Cambridge ESOL CPE at grade C or above, an overall score of 6.5 in the IELTS with a minimum of 6.0 for each subtest, a score of 600 minimum (computer score 250) in the TOEFL, satisfactory standard in the verbal section of the Princeton Test (GMAT), US SAT with 500 in verbal performance, WELT with pass grades of BBC minimum, other evidence of proficiency in the English language which satisfies the board of studies concerned.
