Course Introduction

This Medical Physics MSci offers an excellent education in a thriving field of science and engineering. The foundation in core physics together with the major areas of physics applied to medicine prepare you for a wide variety of careers inside and outside medical physics, including those in scientific research and industry. This four'year programme offers an extra year over the BSc in which you will extend your knowledge by taking additional advanced courses. You are advised to apply for the MSci programme initially but transfer between the BSc and MSci is possible during the first two years.

Course Modules

Year 1: Biophysical basis of medicine; classical mechanics; wave motion, optics and acoustics; electricity and magnetism; thermal physics; mathematics for physics; practical skills (including experimental physics, computer skills and programming, data analysis, project work). Year 2: Mammalian physiology; medical radiation physics; physics of the solid state; electromagnetic waves and relativity; quantum physics; atomic and molecular physics; mathematical methods in physics; practical skills (including experimental physics; computer based skills, databases, spreadsheets). Year 3: Experimental applications in medical physics; group project in medical physics; theoretical physics; statistical and solid state physics; nuclear and particle physics; options: 3 half'unit modules from medical transducers; physiological monitoring; medical scientific computing; optics in medicine; imaging with ionising radiation; imaging with non'ionising radiation; or 1 module from a wider list. Year 4: Major project in medical physics; options: 3 half'unit modules not already taken from the Year 3 list, and 3 half'unit modules chosen from the Year 4 options for physics or applied physics.
