Course Introduction

The Spanish and Portuguese & Brazilian Studies degree is based in London whilst the year abroad is normally split between a Spanish' and Portuguese'speaking country. If you are new to the Portuguese language, you take an intensive language module in Portugal prior to your second year.

Course Modules

Year 1 examples: Medieval Spain (from frontier to empire); introduction to modern Spanish culture I; introduction to modern Spanish culture II; literature, love and society in Portugal; Portuguese identities. Year 2 examples: After Franco (films and texts of the transition); Goya and the dream of reason; perceptions of modernity, Spanish America 1800'1920; Portuguese literature before and after the revolution; leaders, legends and chivalry in medieval Portugal. Year 3: Year abroad. Year 4 examples: Writing women in medieval and early modern Spain; dissertation; translation into English; Portuguese modernism and Fernando Pessoa; Portuguese romanticism.
