Course Introduction

A degree in Mathematics from City will equip students for a role as drivers of future change and allow them to make their mark on a rapidly changing world. City's courses build on our long and distinguished tradition, stretching back nearly 120 years, of training the best students ' we are immensely proud of how our graduates have been at the forefront of mathematics and academia in the UK and worldwide over that time. The Civil Service, government agencies and research establishments require mathematicians, as do large corporations, public utilities and financial companies. Students may take a one'year placement in industry between the second and third years of their BSc/ MMath. During the first and especially the second year, students will receive careers support to help them to identify and apply for placements. Upon graduation, students are equipped with skills for a wide variety of careers in industry, commerce, education and research.

Course Modules

Year 1: Mathematics; statistics; programming; computational mathematics; algebra; calculus; geometry and vectors. Year 2: Calculus and linear algebra; mathematical methods; optional modules from: dynamical systems and analysis; applied and numerical mathematics; data analysis; mathematical statistics; statistical methods and random processes; imperative programming; operating systems and database modelling; computer systems and software engineering. Year 3: 7 modules are chosen from an extensive list of topics covering aspects of pure and applied mathematics; statistics and computing, together with stage 1 of a project. Year 4: 6 modules are chosen to differ from those taken at part 3, together with stage 2 of a project; optional year studying abroad or a year in professional placement between parts 2 and 3.
