Course Introduction

This degree provides the opportunity to specialise in the Danish, Norwegian or Swedish language, and to develop an in'depth appreciation of Scandinavian culture. You will have access to state'of'the'art language teaching facilities and the largest and oldest Scandinavian library in the UK, and will spend a year in a Scandinavian country.

Course Modules

Year 1: Basic/intermediate Danish, Swedish or Norwegian; introduction to linguistics and the Scandinavian languages; introduction to literary studies; histories and cultures of the Nordic region; introduction to old Norse; 1st year project. Year 2: Intermediate Danish, Swedish, Norwegian; introduction to Scandinavian literature; further courses from a wide selection of options in: literature; film; history/politics; Viking studies. Year 3: Spent abroad at a university in Scandinavia. Final year: Advanced Danish, Swedish or Norwegian; translation from the Scandinavian languages; further courses from a wide selection of options.
