Course Introduction

All Materials degrees at Imperial are accreditation from IOM3 ' Institute of Materials, Minerals & Mining and lead to a Chartered Engineer status. We have also earned a reputation for excellence in undergraduate teaching. In the most recent HEFCE national teaching quality assessment, we were the only Materials department in the whole country to be awarded the maximum score across every assessment. There are many opportunities for summer internships, outreach and volunteering, UROP, work and study abroad, extra'curricular students engineering projects: Racing Green (building the ultimate zero'emission race car), Raincatcher (improving the standards of living in Tanzania through the provision of clean drinking water) or E'quinox (providing cost'effective, renewable energy to a village in Rwanda) and many more. The Department of Materials hosts some of the world's most state'of'the'art equipment and you'll have direct access to dedicated undergraduate facilities, including extensive sample preparation and materials testing laboratories and our data processing suite.

Course Modules

Year 1: Materials chemistry; materials engineering; materials physics; mathematics and computing; microstructure and properties of materials; crystallography; business for engineers 1; skills'based exercises; language studies. Year 2: Electronic properties of materials; materials chemistry and polymer science; materials selection; mechanical behaviour; microstructure; mathematics; process principles; business for engineers 2; personal development; language studies. Year 3: Materials characterisation; materials engineering portfolio, including engineer in industry, design study and literature review; business for engineers 3. Year 4: Electroceramics; nanomaterials 2; aerospace materials; nuclear materials; surfaces and interfaces; advanced biomaterials; tissue engineering.
