Course Introduction

You will be studying at a top'ranking languages department with an outstanding research record. We offer excellent quality equipment and dedicated language learning facilities. You will study German at one of the best research centres in the country; German was ranked joint 2nd in the UK for its research in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE). You can choose from a wide range of exciting courses in each language covering literature, film and cultural studies, history and society, and philosophy and the history of ideas. You will spend a year abroad; joint honours students usually spend some time in each country; at a university, as a teaching assistant or on a work placement.

Course Modules

French Year 1: perspectives on modern France (crisis, nation, identity); the visual image in French culture and society; heroes and anti'heroes in their social and cultural context; language, communication and society; landmarks (reading the classics of French literature). Year 2: cinema in France; writing romance and desire; French (the linguist's view); culture and ideology; stage and screen in France. Year 3: advanced French linguistics; Arthurian romance; gender and transgression in early'modern French literature; redefining the erotic in contemporary French literature and film; fictions of history (narrative, film and event in early modern France); image, identity and consumer culture in post'war fiction and film; text and image in France (from cubism to the present); ethics and violence (murder, suicide and genocide in literature and film); the libertines (narratives of experience in early modern France); the passion of place (desire and identity in modern Paris). German Year 1: German language 1; German language 2; reading German literature; truth, language and art: key questions in the humanities; modern Germany (history and society); introduction to comparative textual analysis; the birth of European film or reading European film 1. Year 2: German language 2 (grammar and translation); German language 2 (current affairs); history and politics as reflected in the German cinema from the 1930s to the 1990s; ideals and realities in German drama; narrative strategies in German prose fiction; introduction to modern European philosophy. Year 3: placement year. Year 4: German language 3.
