Course Introduction

This stream provides a foundation for research and practice in environment and health; multidisciplinary training is provided in the advanced methods necessary to undertake epidemiological research on the relationships between health and the environment, and to develop an understanding of the social, economic and political contexts which underlie the establishment of priorities and the selection and evaluation of policy responses.

Course Modules

Core modules include: basic epidemiology; basic statistics for public health and policy; introduction to health economics; principles of social research; environment, health and sustainable development; environmental epidemiology; environmental health policy. Optional modules include: health policy, process and power; health promotion theory; health services; issues in public health; designing disease control programmes in developing countries; drugs, alcohol and tobacco; economic analysis for health policy; epidemiology and control of malaria; health care evaluation; health promotion approaches and methods; molecular biology and recombinant DNA techniques; sociological approaches to health; study design (writing a study proposal); analytical models for decision making; conflict and health; design and analysis of epidemiological studies; health systems; history and health; population, poverty and environment; qualitative methodologies; statistical methods in epidemiology; applied communicable disease control; current issues in safe motherhood and perinatal health; economic evaluation; epidemiology of non'communicable diseases; medical anthropology and public health; modelling and the dynamics of infectious diseases; social epidemiology; spatial epidemiology in public health; tropical environmental health.

Course Additional Entry

2nd Class Honours degree of a recognised UK university; or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard; applicants require some ability in maths post'16 year education; preference will be given to applicants with relevant work experience; applicants with an appropriate technical qualification are also welcomed; applicants without these entry requirements but with relevant professional experience may be eligible for admission.
