Course Modules

Classical Civilisation Year 1: introduction to classical civilisation; introduction to classical art; introduction to ancient history; introduction to ancient literature; introduction to classical mythology; introduction to ancient warfare and society; Latin beginner; ancient Greek beginner. Year 2: myths and mythology. optional modules: work placement; Pompeii (the roman town and its modern reception); the historical Jesus; gender and sexuality in ancient Greece; homer and the epic cycle; politics, society and religion in the late roman empire; intermediate Latin; museums in London; Vergil; Sparta; the ancient city of Rome (study trip to Rome); the Roehampton campus project. Year 3: dissertation or special essay. optional modules: gender and the body in classical art; work placement 2; classics and cinema; romans and barbarians; violence and law in ancient Greece; myth and sacred narrative (ideas, ideologies and interpretations); the gospel of john and the early church; Athena the trickster; reading Latin texts; Demosthenes and the rhetoric of power; merchants and goods on the move (trade in the Roman Empire); Cicero and Rome in the late republic. Theology and Religious Studies Year 1: introduction to the study of Christian theology; introduction to the study of religion. Optional modules: introduction to the bible; classical philosophy; religion in context (Judaism); London as a resource for the study of religions; spirituality and mysticism; living theology 1 (ethics and personhood); introduction to biblical Hebrew; Latin beginner. Year 2: intermediate seminar study; work placement; the historical Jesus; religion in dialogue and conflict; philosophy of religion; Indian philosophy and religion; Islam; Christian theology (the essential questions); the book of revelation (the end of the world); living theology 2 (social justice and human rights). Year 3: dissertation; special essay; theology, art and culture; Islam and women; theologies from the non'western world; religion and human rights; myth and sacred narrative (ideas, ideologies and interpretations); the gospel of john and the early church; Jewish philosophy of religion (the problem of the other); the holocaust and the problem of evil.
