The course provides area'specific, language'oriented, advanced research training in the methodologies and approaches of economics, politics, sociology, history, culture and literature. The course offers 2 pathways, social science and arts and humanities, enabling students to tailor the programme to suit their own experience and interests. The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures, workshops, seminars, language classes and laboratory sessions.
Year 1: Beginner's new language module. Year 2: Intermediate language module; interdisciplinary area studies 2. Optional modules: Quantitative methods; advanced quantitative methods; qualitative methods; theories of social and political research; comparative analysis in social and political research; comparative analysis in social and political research; historical methods and approaches; theories of social and political research; understanding and analysing data; qualitative methods; comparative analysis in social and political research; contemporary cultural studies.

Normally an upper 2nd Class undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline from a UK university or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard.
