Course Introduction

This course is offerd MPhil and PhD by thesis; a diverse range of research applications are welcome; including those that pursue the meanings of designed objects, spaces and images within the context of manufacture, mediation and consumption in any national or international context and historical period after 1400; together with partner institution, the Victoria and Albert, the tutors can offer expertise in a wide range of material and media specialisation, including dress and textiles, graphics, print and digital cultures, architecture, interior and product design, craft and applied arts; cross'disciplinary approaches to the subject from related research fields such as history and history of art, sociology and anthropology are also welcome; areas of recent and current research interest include: craftsmanship and artisanal cultures, design, trade and exchange, design exhibitions, curatorial practice, history and theory design and national/global identities, the design and material culture of the domestic interior, material history and the history of materiality and Asian design history.

Course Additional Entry

For MPhil: normally a good relevant undergraduate degree, or equivalent qualification. For PhD: Master's degree or equivalent qualification; initial registration is usually for MPhil. Exceptionally, other qualifications may be approved, providing that the Academic Board for Concessions and Discipline (ABCD) is satisfied that the applicant has the ability to pursue the programme of research successfully. Candidates who do not speak English as their 1st language will be required to provide evidence that they have achieved at least 93 in the TOEFL internet based test with an additional writing test score of TWE 24 or an IELTS exam score of 6.5 with 6.5 in writing.
