Course Introduction

The course provides a solid foundation for people wishing to pursue a career in electrical engineering, communications, control systems, robotics or sensor systems, through a diverse range of theoretical skills and practical experiences presented in the context of real applications and design experience. In addition, engineers require managerial skills, the ability to communicate effectively and an awareness of the economic, environmental and social implications of their activity, which the course modules provide. City has a long tradition of educating in the area of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, providing courses since the early twentieth century and computer systems engineering since 1973. In the late 1990s, City became one of the first UK universities to provide a BEng Biomedical Engineering. Students are prepared for the world of work through the acquisition of academic knowledge and a range of practical, transferable skills. Our close links with industry enable us to quickly adapt our courses to its needs. Students are strongly encouraged to seek a placement after their second year. The placement will give them the opportunity to learn more about industry, take on graduate level responsibilities and in some cases work as part of a multinational work force.

Course Modules

Year 1: Engineering mathematics; digital electronics 1; circuit theory; electric and magnetic fields 1; analogue electronics 1; systems, signals and control 1; computer architecture and programming; engineering science; engineering applications and design. Year 2: Engineering mathematics 2; software design concepts; computer organisation; communications; electric and magnetic fields 2; systems, signals and control 2; analogue electronics 2; signal transmission; numerical computing and statistics; structure and properties of materials; digital electronics 2; electrical power engineering; engineering applications and design. Year 3:10 modules, each of which consists of about 20 1'hour lectures with associated tutorials; individual project; group design investigations.
