A major/ minor Hispanic Studies and Film degree in the heart of London. The department of Spanish, Portuguese & Latin American Studies is active in all fields of Spanish language, literature and cultural history. Film Studies aims to provide conceptual tools for understanding critically how society is mediated by cinematic and electronic images.
Year 1 examples: Spanish language I; introduction to film studies (forms); introduction to film studies (contexts); culture and society in imperial Spain; Latin American visual arts, 19th and 20th century. Year 2 examples: After Franco (films and texts of the transition); Goya and the dream of reason; perceptions of modernity, Spanish America 1800'1920; Asian popular cinemas; cinema and spectatorship. Year 3: Year abroad. Year 4 examples: Real and ideal in early modern Spanish literature; writing women in medieval and early modern Spain; dissertation; American underground cinema or American independent cinema; fathers in film.
