Thus course is embedded in the discipline of psychology and concerns itself with applied areas of psychological work, which overlap with the provinces of psychotherapy, clinical psychology, counselling and psychiatry. It is informed by a number of philosophical stances underlying issues of development and change, with a particular focus on the wide range of human psychological functioning across the lifespan. This course is designed to provide opportunities for professional and personal development in an applied field that values a range of approaches whilst taking a critical perspective to the theories and practices that inform the discipline. The course is particularly suited to students interested in professional training that will equip them for employment as a clinician in the NHS, the voluntary sector or in private practice. This is achieved by facilitating the development of a flexible, reflective and critical approach to counselling psychology theory, research and practice. The clinical focus of the training in years 1 and 2 is cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT), including 2nd and 3rd'wave CBT. In the 3rd year of the training, you will consider psychodynamic and integrative approaches.
Modules include: Professional practice in counselling psychology; introduction to cognitive behaviour therapy; integrating theory, research and practice 1; professional practice in counselling psychology 2; perspectives on research; integrating theory, research and practice 2; professional practice in counselling psychology 3; supervision, consultation and leadership; integrating theory, research and practice 3; research thesis/portfolio.
