Course Introduction

The course is designed with 5 principal aims in mind: to provide advanced professional development to existing strength and conditioning coaches who wish to enhance their level of professional practice; to provide rapid upskilling of sport scientists, personal trainers and coaches wishing to move towards a career in the physical preparation of athletes; to aid new coaches in the process of preparing for professional accreditation in the UK (the UK Strength and Conditioning Association UKSCA) and abroad (e.g. National Strength and Conditioning Association); to provide useful opportunities for continued professional development of physiotherapists, sport coaches and teachers; to provide a high level educational opportunity to staff responsible for physical preparation of military personnel.

Course Modules

Modules include: study skills; practical techniques in strength and conditioning; research methods and evidence based practice; biomechanics and skill acquisition in strength and conditioning; physiology of training; programme design, planning and monitoring; topical issues in strength and conditioning science; independent project.

Course Additional Entry

There are 2 primary entry requirements to the course: experience in the strength and conditioning field amounting to at least 10 hours per week (this can be either paid or voluntary work); a 2.1 in an undergraduate degree, preferably in sport science or a related field. Some flexibility in requirements is possible for those achieving lower degree classifications where they can demonstrate substantial industry experience and that their current commitment to study has progressed from the time of their 1st degree. There is a non'degree entrance pathway for those meeting 1 of 2 entry requirements: at least 5 years of experience working in sport in roles related to physical preparation of athletes; full'time employment and at least 5 years of experience in a role relating to the physical preparation of military personnel; the non'degree entrance pathway involves a series of entrance assignments prior to acceptance onto the course.
