Course Introduction

Current research areas include: Solar physics: Solar flares, solar activity, high'temperature plasma creation, large'scale coronal structures, coronal mass ejections, coronal bright points, influence of Sun on Earth and interplanetary space, origin of solar wind; solar instrumentation: High'resolution X'ray and EUV imaging photon detectors, on'board processing and control systems and related software; solar wind: Interactions with solar system bodies; Earth and planetary magnetospheres: Structure and dynamics, wave'particle interactions, aurora, shock, foreshock, magnetopause, cusp, substorms, plasmapause, acceleration and precipitation processes, comparative magnetospheres, satellite and atmosphere interactions; cometary environment: Ion pickup, velocity space diffusion, mass loading boundaries, plasma tail, ground'based imaging; spacecraft/plasma interactions: surface and deep dielectric charging; trapped particle environment; instrumentation.

Course Additional Entry

Minimum of an upper 2nd Class Honours degree together with an MSc from a UK university in a relevant subject, or an overseas equivalent qualification. If your education has not been conducted in the English language, you will be expected to demonstrate evidence of an adequate level of English proficiency.
