Course Introduction

The programme welcomes applications for research degrees, either MPhil or PhD by project and by thesis; most research, both by staff and students, is practice'led; research is conducted in three broad areas: under the banner extreme functionality, the optimum performance of products is questioned as is materials and designed outcomes; an awareness of social manifestos leads to consideration of design as an agent of change in the social and political sphere; by considering the fantastic, it can be asked how design can make positive statements, inspire, and convey meaning, and explore the designer's role as originator, artist, manufacturer and communicator.

Course Additional Entry

For MPhil: normally a good relevant undergraduate degree, or equivalent qualification. For PhD: Master's degree or equivalent qualification; initial registration is usually for MPhil. Exceptionally, other qualifications may be approved, providing that the Academic Board for Concessions and Discipline (ABCD) is satisfied that the applicant has the ability to pursue the programme of research successfully. Candidates who do not speak English as their 1st language will be required to provide evidence that they have achieved at least 93 in the TOEFL internet based test with an additional writing test score of TWE 24 or an IELTS exam score of 6.5 including 6.5 in writing.
