Course Introduction

Mathematics is an active and dynamic research department here at Brunel. Our academics' work is frequently supported by external grants and contracts with leading industry and government establishments. As a result, lecturers are often working at the frontiers of their subject and as their work feeds directly into their teaching, you can rest assured your degree course is truly up to date. All our mathematics courses incorporate projects which you are free to approach in the way that best suits your particular strengths and interests. For example, it's often possible to emphasise either concrete applications or abstract theory, and you can elect to use theoretical or computational tools only, or a mixture of both. We offer UK students up to 10 scholarships of up to '1000 for each year of study on any of our BSc or MMath programmes. You'll find more information here ' just follow the links. Check here for more details.'mmath Each of our BSc programmes will meet the educational requirements of the Chartered Mathematician designation awarded by the Institute of Mathematics and its applications provided it is followed by training and employment experience so you acquire equivalent competences to those specified by the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) for taught Master's degrees. Our MMath degree programmes for Mathematics and Financial Mathematics both meet the educational requirements for the Chartered Mathematician (CMath) Designation. In addition to our BSc Mathematics we also offer specialist pathways/Joint Honours in the following areas giving you the chance to tailor your studies: ' Financial Mathematics BSc (Hons)/MMath ' Mathematics with Computer Science BSc (Hons) ' Mathematics and Statistics with Management BSc (Hons)

Course Modules

Level 1 Core: Linear algebra; calculus and numerical methods; discrete mathematics, probability and statistics; construction of programs. Level 2 Core: Communication skills and operational research; linear and numerical methods; algebra and discrete mathematics; models of computation and systems; software engineering methods. Options: Vector calculus and applications; analysis; statistics. Level 3 Core: Major project; statistics; numerical and variational methods for PDEs; complex variable methods and applications; risk and optimisation in finance; differential and integral equations; encryption and data compression; stochastic models and mathematical finance; database systems: design and application; computer algorithms and applications; interactive systems.
