Mechanical engineering with building services includes topics in which many of our research staff lead the field, for example the natural ventilation of deep'plan buildings and the application of solar energy in buildings. The design of heating, ventilation and air conditioning, lighting and security systems are becoming more complex, efficient and sophisticated to meet this demand. This course covers all the fundamental elements of mechanical engineering and design and provides background in subjects like electronics, electrical engineering, control, energy and environment.
Level 1 Core: Fundamentals of solid body mechanics; fundamentals of thermofluids; analytical methods and skills; engineering materials and manufacturing and electrical machines; introduction to engineering design; mechanical laboratories, technical drawing and workshop experience. Level 2 Core: Solid body mechanics; thermofluids; computing, analytical methods, control and instrumentation; professional engineering applications and practice; design and analysis of mechanical systems and components. Level 3: Optional Work placement (for thick'sandwich mode of study). Level 4 Core: Major individual project; fundamentals and applications of numerical modelling; business and the environment; analysis of vehicle structures; HVAC systems; electrical systems for buildings. Level 5 Core: Major group project; strategic management and enterprise; research methodology and innovation; advanced modelling and design; advanced thermofluids; advanced solid body mechanics.
