The course is designed to develop your language skills in French or Spanish and enhance your ability to teach a modern language to young children. The programme meets the standards required for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). It is designed, in collaboration with schools, to develop your knowledge, skills and understanding of what it means to be a professional in school in the context of east London, where the skills of educating children in a multicultural, multilingual urban environment are paramount. Much of your time will be spent in schools, observing learning and teaching, exploring the interface between theory and practice, and working with pupils in a range of classroom settings. You will engage in practical and theoretical study and be encouraged to reflect on and take responsibility for your own professional development. You will study in a diverse community of students, and be expected to participate, collaborate, and be proactive. Themes such as equal opportunities, multilingualism and meeting the needs of children with special educational needs, underpin the programme. Trainees spend 18 weeks on placement in schools; 5'11 years (Key Stages 1 and 2). Leads to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) subject to satisfactory performance in skills tests.
Core modules include: Learning, teaching across the curriculum and effective pedagogy; developing and extending understanding of a specific area (modern languages); professional practice (inclusive practice in multicultural urban settings; developing understanding and skills in English and mathematics; managing professional change and development (active inquiry leading to classroom intervention). Optional modules include: Critical incidents in teaching; technology'enhanced learning.
Course Additional Entry
Honours degree 2.2 or higher; GCSE grade C (or equivalent) in English, science and mathematics; interview required; applicants need to demonstrate their French/Spanish language skills for example, as part of their degree programme or an A'level or equivalent; by the start of the programme applicants are required to successfully complete a minimum of 5 days observation in a primary school.
