SOAS is the only university in the UK to offer a comprehensive range of courses in the language, literatures and cultures of Indonesia. Our students come from a range of educational backgrounds, and we also welcome mature students, many of whom may have worked or travelled in Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore or Brunei. The Chinese combined honours degree aims to give a broad understanding of Chinese culture through study of its language, history and literature from earliest times up to the present in combination with a solid grounding in another language or discipline.
Indonesian Modules include: Indonesian language; introduction to South East Asia; South East Asia on film; cultural foundations of Indonesia; Indonesian literature; Indonesia on screen; Jawi and the manuscript tradition; extended essay in South East Asian studies; independent study project in South East Asian studies. Chinese (modern and classical) Year 1: Elementary modern Chinese language 1; history and culture of China; introduction to classical Chinese; elementary modern Chinese language 2. Year 2: Year abroad. Year 3: Intermediate modern Chinese language 1; intermediate modern Chinese language; traditional Chinese language and literature 1; optional modules: Modern Chinese film and theatre; elementary Cantonese; elementary spoken Hokkien (Minnanyu, Taiwanese). Year 4: Dissertation in Chinese studies; optional modules: Advanced modern Chinese language; modern Chinese literature; traditional Chinese language and literature 2; styles of modern Chinese literary language; elementary spoken Hokkien (Minnanyu, Taiwanese).
