This programme includes university'based (60 days) and school'based elements (120 days). These elements enable student teachers to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills required to teach in secondary schools. Practical teaching experience is gained in 2 main schools, where student teachers are allocated a mentor who is a subject specialist teacher and offers feedback and guidance. Students are formally assessed against the national statutory requirements for Qualified Teacher Status. Students are offered a choice of specialisms, each covering a main teaching subject. Aims of the programme: Developing practical knowledge and theoretical understanding to work with secondary school children, developing knowledge of the National Curriculum, widening individual skills, expertise and knowledge of the specialist subject. The music course offers teaching experience outside the school setting e.g. LEA music service and outreach projects, and is run in collaboration with the Trinity College of Music.

Course Additional Entry
Students must have the subject knowledge and intellectual qualities to be teachers, plus grade C at GCSE or equivalent in English and mathematics. A degree (2.2 or above) from a UK university or equivalent. Clear spoken and written English. Candidates attend an interview and must show a commitment to working with pupils in the secondary age range.
