Course Introduction

Architectural Research sets out to humanise the practices, theories and meanings of architectural design. It develops new knowledge and understanding of architecture in relation to its aesthetic, socio'cultural and political dimensions, from insides to outsides, the room to the city, the programme's culture spans all areas of spatial design; the understanding of architecture is enhanced through multimedia links to new disciplines, technologies, materials, practices and processes. Whether as theories, designs, objects, strategies or details, focus is on invention and discovery; it integrates the perception, experience and desires of inhabitants with innovations in the critical concepts, contexts, contents and consequences of architectural design; MPhil and PhD by project and thesis are offered.

Course Modules

There are 4 overarching research themes: Image and language; design, innovation and society; dialogues of form and surface; cultures of curating.

Course Additional Entry

For MPhil: normally a good relevant undergraduate degree, or equivalent qualification. For PhD: Master's degree or equivalent qualification; initial registration is usually for MPhil. Exceptionally, other qualifications may be approved, providing that the Academic Board for Concessions and Discipline (ABCD) is satisfied that the applicant has the ability to pursue the programme of research successfully. Candidates who do not speak English as their 1st language will be required to provide evidence that they have achieved at least 93 in the TOEFL internet based test with an additional writing test score of TWE 24 or an IELTS exam score of 6.5 with 6.5 in writing.
