Course Introduction

This course examines the broader issues of business imperatives and technology responses that have changed the way information systems are perceived; it also addresses the key aspects of contemporary business information systems, from requirements analysis, system modelling and design to the development of modern software solutions and databases that can be incorporated into fully operational information systems; students explore the latest technologies and industry standards, with a particular emphasis on the web, internet applications, enterprise information systems, service'oriented and component'based development, and similar areas; by examining issues such as security, privacy and ethics in information systems, students enhance their understanding of societal use of information.

Course Modules

Core modules: architectures, design and deployment of is; methods for research and industry; postgraduate project module; requirements and system modelling; option modules: business systems programming; computing for business and management; data management and repositories; data warehousing and olap; database languages; enterprise utility computing; it business models; project management; semantic and collaborative technologies; social systems; systems interoperability; web'enabled database applications.

Course Additional Entry

A good Honours degree (2.2 or above) from a UK university (or overseas equivalent) in an IT or computing discipline, or in a closely related discipline to IT or computing (e.g. economics and business studies), or underpinning for/insight into it (e.g. sciences or engineering). Applications from individuals with relevant work experience and other qualifications are welcomed. Candidates whose 1st language is not English should have an IELTS score of 6.5 or equivalent.
