Birkbeck, University of London

Course Introduction

Arts and humanities courses at Birkbeck are ranked third best in London and 11th in the UK in the Times Higher Education 2015'16 World University Subject Rankings. Birkbeck's BA programme offers a multidisciplinary approach to studying the language, culture and history of German'speaking countries. The variety of research interests and teaching experiences of our academic staff means that we offer a wide range of courses and topics, ranging from the sixteenth to the twenty'first centuries, covering literature, film, philosophy, history and memory studies. Our School of Arts is in the top 5 in the country. Our Department of Cultures and Languages brings together research and teaching in French, German, Japanese, Portuguese and Spanish, making it an outstanding interdisciplinary department. As part of the Department of European Cultures and Languages you can also choose modules beyond the confines of German studies, thus integrating your particular field of study into a wider European cultural context. Teaching of both content and language modules is usually in small seminar groups, which offer ample opportunity to participate actively in class discussions. Birkbeck is different: classes are in the evening, so you can work, volunteer or do your own thing during the day. Record numbers of students are doing just that and getting a head start on their future careers.
